Not that long ago, you could keep all the balls in the air without thinking twice.
You’d get through a busy workday, run errands on the way home, make dinner, help your family, and still find the energy to tackle a few more things before bed.
Now, something feels different.
You wake up tired, even after what should have been a good night’s sleep. You lose your train of thought halfway through a conversation. Small things that never used to bother you suddenly feel overwhelming. Your patience is shorter, your energy is gone, and you’ve started noticing changes in your hair, your mood, and your ability to keep up with the pace of life.
So naturally, you start asking yourself:
“Is this just perimenopause?”
It’s one of the most common questions I hear.
And it’s an understandable one. Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause can absolutely affect how you feel.
But after spending more than 25 years helping women uncover the root causes behind their symptoms, I’ve learned something that surprises many of my patients:
Your hormones may be changing, but they don’t tell the whole story.
Recently, I met with a woman who came to me feeling completely defeated.
She was exhausted every day. Her mood swings were affecting both her family and her work. She’d noticed significant hair thinning, and no matter how hard she tried to take care of herself, she felt like her body wasn’t responding.
She was convinced her hormones were to blame.
So we did what I always encourage my patients to do—we looked deeper.
Sometimes the Answers Aren’t Where You Expect Them
One of the things I love most about functional medicine is that we don’t stop at symptoms.
We ask a different question:
“Why is this happening?”
When I reviewed her lab results, I expected to see hormonal changes that are common during this stage of life.
Instead, something else immediately caught my attention.
Her hormones weren’t the biggest concern.
Her gut health actually looked quite good.
What stood out were the markers related to her adrenal function and her immune system.
Her body was struggling to respond to stress, and one of her immune markers was alarmingly low.
Suddenly, her symptoms made sense.
This wasn’t simply a hormone problem.
Her body had been under so much pressure for so long that it was struggling to keep up.
Then We Started Talking About Her Life
Lab results tell me what is happening.
Your story helps me understand why.
As we talked, she described a life that probably sounds familiar to many women.
She worked all day.
She managed the household.
She supported her family.
She helped care for her aging parents.
Every minute of every day seemed to belong to someone else.
Even when she had a rare morning to herself, she wasn’t resting. She was catching up on cleaning, running errands, buying groceries, or trying to stay ahead of a to-do list that never seemed to end.
At one point, she looked at me and said,
“My bucket is full every single day.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Because I hear different versions of it almost every week.
Women are carrying careers, families, relationships, aging parents, households, and the invisible mental load of remembering everything for everyone.
And somewhere along the way, they stop noticing just how much they’re carrying…
Until their body starts asking them to.
Your Body Can Only Stay in Survival Mode for So Long
Stress isn’t the enemy.
In fact, your body is brilliantly designed to handle short periods of stress.
The problem is when stress never switches off.
When you’re constantly rushing, worrying, multitasking, and putting yourself last, your nervous system stays on high alert. Over time, your adrenal glands have to work harder to meet the demand, and your immune system can begin to suffer.
That’s why symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, mood swings, poor sleep, and even hair changes aren’t always about hormones alone.
They’re often signs that your body has been living in survival mode for far longer than it was ever designed to.
Healing Doesn’t Always Mean Doing More
One of the biggest conversations I had with this client wasn’t about adding another supplement or following a stricter diet.
It was about creating more space for her body to recover.
We talked about taking a few things off her to-do list instead of constantly adding more.
Her children were old enough to help around the house. Her partner could take on more responsibility. Even bringing in help with household chores, if possible, could allow her body to rest and recover.
Because sometimes, healing starts when we stop believing we have to do everything ourselves.
We also talked about allowing herself to slow down.
When your nervous system has been running on high alert for years, it doesn’t automatically know how to switch off. Learning to calm your nervous system is a skill, and it looks different for everyone.
For some women, that might mean prioritizing sleep. For others, it may be massage therapy, acupuncture, somatic therapy, mindfulness, or simply creating moments of stillness in an otherwise busy day.
The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is to help your body move out of survival mode and back into a place where it can heal.
Midlife Is a Turning Point
One thing I always remind my patients is that midlife isn’t just about managing symptoms—it’s an opportunity to protect your future health.
When we ignore persistent fatigue, chronic stress, or other warning signs, we’re missing the chance to address imbalances before they develop into more serious health concerns.
That’s why I believe in looking beyond symptoms. Through comprehensive lab testing and a personalized functional medicine approach, we can uncover what’s really happening and create a plan that’s designed specifically for you.
This Is Something I Understand Personally
As we were talking, I found myself relating to her story.
I’ve had seasons in my own life where I was building my business, looking after my family, and trying to keep up with everything that needed to get done.
Like so many women, I kept telling myself I’d slow down when life became less busy.
But life rarely slows down on its own.
That’s one of the reasons I’m so passionate about helping women understand what’s really happening beneath the surface.
Because I know how easy it is to dismiss the signs your body is giving you until they’re impossible to ignore.
And that’s exactly why simply blaming everything on hormones can sometimes cause us to miss the bigger picture.
Your Body Is Trying to Tell You Something. It’s Time to Listen.
If you’ve been feeling exhausted, foggy, emotional, or simply unlike yourself, don’t assume it’s “just hormones” or something you have to accept as part of getting older.
Your symptoms have a story. Together, we can uncover what’s behind them and create a personalized plan to help you feel more energized, clear-headed, and confident in your health again.
