In this blog, I love discussing the conditions of women from 35 and beyond. It’s a time in life when hormones start to change and cause different symptoms. These women will discover natural ways to deal with the changes happening in their bodies, including issues of high cholesterol and triglycerides levels.
Stealth Fatty Conditions
Today I want to talk about something hidden and hard to see. It’s not something you can predict, and you may or may not feel it. If you get routine blood work done every one to two years, you may notice this suddenly.
It is high cholesterol combined with high triglycerides. It may be one or the other, but it is often a combination. It can mean you are at higher risk for developing cardiovascular disease or Heart conditions. You don’t have to deal with these conditions as you get to this age and period of life.
Many women don’t know why they have high cholesterol and triglycerides. They may think it is because of their genes and that their grandparents, parents, aunt, and uncle had heart disease. But the root cause is often not related to genes. It’s common, especially for women in their forties and mid-fifties.
Finding the Root Cause
If it is from your genes, it is only a tiny percentage. We want to learn the real cause of this. These women are seldom symptomatic. They will start to probe questions about their symptoms. They frequently have an indication of increased fatigue with exercise.
These women are getting tired very effortlessly than they typically would. They thought it was just aging and reported having more trouble sleeping. It’s often related to chronic inflammation, which doesn’t allow them to get into a deep sleep. Chronic inflammation is part of what’s driving up the cholesterols and triglyceride levels in the body.
If you ask the right questions, many women also mention having some digestive issues going on as well. They have more heartburn and are bloated after meals. Their bowels aren’t moving as consistently as they used to. Again, potentially it is related to the high triglycerides and cholesterols, which have to do with poor digestion of fats and other foods.
Those things can raise these triglyceride levels. We need to figure out how to address the high triglyceride levels. Maybe you need medication, but it’s not going to deal with the root cause of those levels getting high. We need to figure this out through proper functional laboratory testing.
Possible Cause
There is a possible cause for all of these. The most common cause is a combination of diet choices, lack of exercise, damage, and poor detoxification in the gut over many years. These causes can be related to low stomach acid levels, which don’t allow you to digest fats and other foods right.
These fats end up in the bloodstream, circulating instead of being broken down and used for fuel. The foods you eat bring in healthy fats and become fuel for the brain and hormones. They help with hormone development and processing, especially when your hormone levels start to decline when getting closer to and transitioning into menopause.
You need to get the digestion in the gut sorted out to help you with the root cause of cholesterols and triglycerides going high. Sometimes when you are on one or more medications, you are already aware of these things happening to you for a year or more.
Dealing with the Symptoms
Aside from using medications, you can also utilize natural solutions. You can also combine natural solutions with medicines. It’s essential to know and understand these strategies where they can be helpful.
Nutrients
You can deal with these symptoms even if the numbers start to shift when you do blood tests and check on the amount of Omega-3 (Omega-3 Index Test). You can get nutrients from foods like fish (high in Omega-3), nuts, and seeds. A variety of those nuts and seeds coming in daily is helpful. You can eat fish two to three times per week.
Foods that contain magnesium can be helpful. Many different foods from both the plant and animal families have magnesium. Most plants contain magnesium. If you are eating a healthy diet, you should get enough magnesium during the day. However, if you need more, you can take a supplement.
Gut Issues
If the gut isn’t functioning well, you’re not digesting and absorbing your nutrients. It’s because there’s inflammation, which is very common. It can happen for various reasons over many years and is often related to unhealthy lifestyle choices.
You may need to take a magnesium supplement. The supplement will help with magnesium levels short-term while it’s working on healing the gut by getting nutrition and foods absorbed correctly. Another thing that can be very helpful is the regulation of blood pressure. It is often related to the symptoms.
Using Turmeric
When these triglycerides and cholesterols go up, you can use turmeric and its derivative curcumin. There are some effects on lowering blood pressure when taking a low dose of curcumin every day. In addition, you can take the whole food form as turmeric.
You can grade turmeric up in its fresh root from Curcuma longa. You can also use it in powdered form in many recipes for cooking and smoothies. Ginger also has a very similar effect. There are some great natural strategies out there that can help you to move these numbers.
It’s not enough to simply move the numbers in those tests. You must get to the root cause of the problem. We need to figure out on a deeper level the reasons why it’s happening in the first place. We often address the problem through nutrition strategies. We also need to address lifestyle issues like exercise, but we want to go deeper than these strategies and matters.
Functional Laboratory Testing
We need to look at functional lab testing to understand what’s happening in the gut. Your gut may be inflamed. You may not be digesting and absorbing your nutrients properly. Some of those critical nutrients that help regulate these levels in your body are deficient.
Most often, there needs to be an individualized lifestyle plan combined with proper nutrition, a proper amount of exercise, and specific supplementation to help you get the balance back in your gut.
It is needed to heal and rebalance these triglycerides and cholesterol levels for the long term. Often you even need to dig deeper than those approaches and do some genetic testing. Genetic testing isn’t just to see congenital positions to cardiometabolic disease, which you might think.

If the levels are high, we also need to consider genetic testing to understand if you have predispositions to nutrient imbalances and potential food sensitivities. It is a potential for the gut to be dysfunctional as far as digestion is concerned. There is genetics around all of these things. We need to put the pieces together as a puzzle to see the whole picture in understanding your health and finding where the root cause is. These will help you learn how to return the balance in your body.
Medication Side Effects
You can get those triglycerides and cholesterol levels rebalanced with my help. We will titrate them down and eventually get them off. If you use medications to address these issues, there are side effects of increased fatigue. It is a symptom very common to women as they get closer to menopause and beyond.
You certainly don’t want the fatigue symptom to get worse. I will help you manage your numbers and prevent the risks of cardiometabolic diseases by using a better way than just medications. Another hidden root cause of high cholesterols is an imbalanced thyroid. The thyroid is often overlooked and not tested enough using some tests like the thyroid, TSH, and comprehensive panels.
When you look at the tests, you might not understand the trends in thyroid imbalance affecting your cholesterol levels. Again, the thyroid issue is one of those hidden root causes often overlooked and needs to look at it. In addition, we will create a comprehensive plan to help you understand and get the balance back in your triglycerides and cholesterol levels. These will help you restore your energy and ability to exercise, recreate, have fun, and enjoy your life.
The balance will also prevent cardiovascular disease and your fear of it, for there is a fear factor. You don’t want to develop heart disease. We don’t want to think that we’re at higher risk for a potential of a heart attack or a stroke, or other things. You have other things to worry about in your life.
