Symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and trouble sleeping can be debilitating for many women in their 40s. These symptoms are often associated with hormone changes and can be difficult to cope with on a daily basis. While there are many possible solutions to managing these symptoms, finding the right one can be a challenge. This blog post will explore whether supplements are really the only answer to relieving hormone-related symptoms. Read on to discover what could be the best fit long-term solution for you.

It’s your changing hormones

It is quite common for women, as they get into their 40 to the early to mid-50s and beyond, to try different products to help them try and feel better. Women of all ages experience changes throughout their life, yet as women get into their 40s and 50’s there are many shifts in hormone levels which can lead to symptoms were never before experienced.

Some of the most common symptoms are changes in your mood, being more irritable, and not being that tolerant of things. You might also notice your moods are dipping more. You’re more depressed. Sadder often. You might even notice that sometimes you’re more anxious. It might be related to timing in your cycle, but it might not be. You might even feel like you’re anxious to the point that you’re having a panic attack. And you’ve never had them before.

Mood changes can happen a lot when women get older. This is because our sex hormones change a lot. Sometimes we might look different and feel different because of this. We might gain weight in some areas, like around our hips or thighs. This can make us feel uncomfortable like we don’t fit in our own skin.

Supplements and Natural Solutions

You, along with many others, might also be trying some supplements. You might be looking at natural solutions by going to the vitamin shop, getting recommendations, looking online, and seeing what others have said has worked. And so you go and try it as well.

Before you know it, you’ve got a cupboard full of supplements. You’re trying a variety of them to see if you can get yourself feeling better. But sadly, you don’t feel like you have had any great long-term solutions. You still feel quite moody. You don’t notice any changes to your weight regardless of some of the ads for these supplements have told you.

You’re wondering why you still feel the same when it’s clear that the money spent on these supplements has been significant. I understand how your head is now spinning with all of these other possibilities for getting relief.

Supplements = Support

Supplements can be very helpful and powerful as far as a support to natural healing. It’s important to note that supplements are actually just like they say they are: they’re supplements. They are something that supports healthy lifestyle strategies.

The best way for women, particularly those in their 40s and beyond, to maintain their vibrancy and energy as they age, is by practicing healthy lifestyles. It goes without saying then that if you don’t have the lifestyle strategies in place first, this could be why supplements “dont work” the way you want them to.

Lifestyle Strategies

There are some lifestyle strategies that need to be put in place. Have you been eating a healthy whole foods diet 80%-90% of the time? Try to check if you’re not eating packaged, processed foods, eating out all the time, or eating on the go. It’s ideal as well that you’re not staying up too late at night.

Maybe you’re stressed out all the time. You’re busy as you’re always working. You never have any downtime either. Are you physically and mentally on the go always and you just never have a chance to relax? Definitely, it’s important to have some stress management strategies. Sometimes it is helpful to look at how much stress you have. Look at where the stress is coming from and see if there are ways to lower the amount of stress you feel.

Lifestyle and stress management strategies are very important to put in place, especially for us women as they get into our 40s. Otherwise, there’s no supplements that are going to help us get ourselves feeling how we want to feel. In other words, the lifestyle strategies are the base, then there are many amazing supplement supports that can help to enhance these lifestyle strategies once we have them in place.

Before diving into stocking supplements

Just buying supplements because they are recommended doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the right ones for you. It is helpful to work with a functional medicine practitioner, such as myself, to help you do lab testing and understand your symptoms. This is important so you can find the root cause of the problem and figure out how to start healing.

From there, you can get more specific with your supplements. You can get a customized plan so you don’t necessarily have to take so many different supplements. Based on your past experiences with different types of medicine and testing, it is possible you will only be able to take those medications or supplements which have been shown effective for treating symptoms such as yours.

The one thing about lifestyle strategies is they can definitely help you to feel significantly better. But if you want to be as healthy as possible, supplements are often something you need to take to feel your best. This is especially true as you get older and your sex hormones start to change.

So, what can you do if you’re experiencing hormone imbalance symptoms? First and foremost, it’s important to see a healthcare practitioner who is well-versed in hormone health. We will be able to help you get to the root of the issue and create a plan tailored specifically for your unique situation. In addition, there are some supplements that may be helpful in restoring balance – but it’s important to work with a professional before starting any kind of supplementation regimen.
