Hi, I’m Angela

Yes, please!

You’re eating better.
You’ve cut back on sugar.
You’re exercising more than you used to.

And somehow… the weight still keeps creeping up.

Especially around your stomach.

I hear this from women all the time.

By the time many women reach their 40s and 50s, they feel like their bodies aren’t responding the way they used to. The workouts that once gave them results no longer seem to make a difference. Restrictive diets leave them exhausted, frustrated, and discouraged. And despite trying harder than ever, the scale barely moves.

Many women start blaming themselves.

They wonder:

“Am I doing something wrong?”
“Why does my body feel so different now?”
“Why is it so much harder to lose weight?”

What I want you to know is this:

You are not lazy.
You are not failing.
And your body is not working against you.

What’s happening is that your body is going through major hormonal and metabolic shifts during perimenopause and menopause, and those changes affect far more than just your reproductive hormones.

Midlife Weight Gain Isn’t Just About Calories

One of the biggest frustrations I see is women trying to eat less and exercise more, only to feel stuck.

Many women start restrictive diets.
They cut out foods.
They increase cardio.
They add more HIIT workouts.

And while these strategies may have worked in your 20s or 30s, they often stop working the same way during perimenopause and menopause.

That’s because bigger metabolic changes are happening in the body.

As estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone begin to shift, the body becomes much more sensitive to imbalances in other systems involved in metabolism, including:

  • Insulin
  • Cortisol
  • Thyroid hormones
  • Inflammation
  • Digestion and nutrient absorption

When these systems become imbalanced, women often start experiencing:

  • Weight gain around the waistline
  • Slower metabolism
  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Cravings
  • Energy crashes
  • Difficulty losing weight despite healthy habits

Stress May Be Affecting Your Metabolism More Than You Realize

One of the biggest root causes I see in practice is chronic stress.

And I’m not just talking about emotional stress.

Many women in this stage of life are balancing careers, children, aging parents, relationships, busy schedules, and nonstop responsibilities.

In many ways, women are doing more than ever at the very time when their bodies need more support, recovery, and balance.

When the body remains under stress for long periods of time, cortisol levels rise.

Cortisol is the body’s primary stress hormone, and while it helps us respond to stress short-term, elevated cortisol over time can create a ripple effect throughout the body.

High cortisol can:

  • Increase belly fat storage
  • Raise inflammation
  • Disrupt blood sugar balance
  • Slow thyroid function
  • Increase fatigue and burnout
  • Make weight loss feel nearly impossible

I often see women stuck in a cycle where stress, inflammation, and hormone imbalance continue feeding into one another.

Blood Sugar Balance Becomes More Important After 40

Another major factor I look at is insulin balance.

Insulin helps regulate blood sugar, but as hormones shift during perimenopause and menopause, many women become more sensitive to blood sugar fluctuations.

Some women may also have a stronger genetic tendency toward insulin resistance, especially if there’s a family history of type 2 diabetes.

When blood sugar becomes unstable, the body is more likely to:

  • Store fat more easily
  • Trigger cravings
  • Experience energy crashes
  • Hold onto weight around the midsection

This doesn’t mean you need to starve yourself or obsess over calories.

What I often encourage instead is becoming more intentional about:

  • Processed foods
  • Refined carbohydrates
  • Sugar intake
  • Inflammatory eating habits

The goal isn’t restriction.
It’s helping the body feel safe, stable, and supported again.

Thyroid Health and a Slower Metabolism

I also see a strong connection between stress, inflammation, and thyroid health.

One thyroid hormone in particular—T3—plays a major role in metabolism.

When stress and inflammation stay elevated for too long, the body may struggle to properly produce and utilize thyroid hormones.

This can contribute to:

  • Slower metabolism
  • Weight gain
  • Brain fog
  • Low energy
  • Low motivation
  • Difficulty losing weight

This is why simply taking a supplement or hormone therapy without understanding the deeper root cause may not fully solve the issue.

Functional Medicine Looks at the Bigger Picture

One of the biggest differences in a functional medicine approach is that we look at the body as deeply interconnected.

Hormones are influenced by:

  • Stress
  • Digestion
  • Nutrient absorption
  • Inflammation
  • Detoxification pathways
  • Lifestyle habits
  • Blood sugar balance

That’s why I focus on comprehensive lab testing and personalized wellness planning.

By looking deeper into the body, we can often uncover hidden imbalances contributing to symptoms and metabolic changes.

This may include evaluating:

  • Hormones
  • Thyroid function
  • Blood sugar markers
  • Inflammation
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Digestive health
  • Detoxification pathways

Once we identify those root causes, it becomes much easier to create targeted strategies that actually support your body.

Small, Personalized Changes Can Make a Huge Difference

One thing I always remind women is that improving metabolic health isn’t necessarily about working harder.

Often, it’s about becoming more specific and personalized with your health.

Supportive lifestyle strategies may include:

  • Prioritizing whole, nutrient-dense foods
  • Supporting blood sugar balance
  • Reducing inflammatory foods
  • Managing stress more intentionally
  • Improving sleep and recovery
  • Supporting digestion and nutrient absorption
  • Following a personalized plan based on lab testing

I’ve worked with many women who were able to improve their energy, rebalance their metabolism, and lose significant weight after implementing strategies tailored specifically to their bodies.

Your Symptoms Are Trying to Tell You Something
