As we journey through the holiday season, I hope you’re finding moments of calm amidst the busyness. Thanksgiving has just passed here in the U.S., and the countdown to Christmas is well underway. The days are shorter, the nights colder, and many of us retreat indoors, feeling low energy, unmotivated, and just… flat.

For women navigating perimenopause and menopause, this time of year can feel especially challenging. Many of my clients share stories of creeping weight gain, sagging motivation, and a diminished sense of themselves. The common narrative? “It must be my hormones.” Specifically, plummeting estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

While it’s true these hormones naturally decline with age, there’s a nuance that often goes overlooked—testosterone, the unsung hero of vitality, should not be dropping as quickly as most believe. Some is produced in the ovaries, but the adrenal glands play a critical role, especially during stressful seasons like the holidays.

When Stress Hijacks Your Hormones

Here’s the key insight: feeling “off” isn’t always just about sex hormones. Chronic stress, particularly elevated cortisol, can dramatically suppress testosterone and disrupt your metabolism.

I recently worked with a client whose story perfectly illustrates this. She came to me feeling exhausted, foggy, and disconnected from her body. Her DUTCH test revealed:

✅ Estrogen and progesterone: declining, but appropriate for her age

❌ Testosterone: catastrophically low
❌ Cortisol: sky-high, all day long

Normally, cortisol follows a natural rhythm: it’s low in the morning, rises to peak while we’re active, and tapers off toward bedtime. But when cortisol stays elevated throughout the day, the body interprets it as constant danger. Resources get diverted away from other hormone production—including testosterone—and this imbalance fuels fatigue, low motivation, mood swings, weight gain, and even long-term health risks.

Why HRT Isn’t Always the Answer

Many women instinctively think, “I need hormone replacement therapy (HRT)” when faced with these symptoms. But before jumping to HRT, it’s essential to see the bigger picture.

Often, the solution isn’t adding more hormones—it’s reducing stress and supporting adrenal health. When cortisol levels are managed, hormones can decline naturally, more harmoniously, and your body starts to feel like itself again.

Practical Steps to Restore Balance

Here are actionable steps you can begin today:

  1. Slow down: Permit yourself to rest, even in short intervals.
  2. Deep breathing: Take a few minutes to breathe deeply and reset your nervous system.
  3. Create cozy moments: Sit by a fire, enjoy a warm drink, or simply step outside for fresh air.
  4. Avoid extremes: Over-exercising or strict calorie restriction can increase stress and worsen hormone imbalance.

The goal is not perfection—it’s supporting your body so it can transition through perimenopause and menopause calmly and naturally.

The Power of Personalized Testing

Understanding what’s really happening in your body is the first step to reclaiming your energy and vitality. Comprehensive hormone testing allows you to see patterns that explain fatigue, low mood, and weight changes. From there, an individualized plan can help:

  • Rebalance cortisol and stress hormones
  • Support adrenal health
  • Restore sex hormone balance
  • Improve energy, motivation, and overall well-being
