Navigating through perimenopause and menopause can feel like you’re stuck on a roller coaster—your body is changing, and it’s not always easy to keep up. As a woman in this stage of life myself, combined with my training in functional medicine, I get it. I feel it. And I want you to know that you’re not alone in this journey. It’s not just about managing symptoms; it’s about reclaiming your vitality, your motivation, and ultimately, yourself again.

One of the biggest struggles I hear from women over 40 in my practice is something that’s often dismissed but so reallow motivation. The kind that makes it hard to tackle your to-do list, get out of bed with energy, or even get excited about the things you once loved. But here’s the truth: it’s not just in your head. It’s happening in your body, and it’s directly tied to those hormonal shifts we all face as we move through this transition.

So, why does this happen? Well, it’s not just about your estrogen levels dropping. It’s a cascade of hormonal changes—cortisol, thyroid hormones, insulin, and even testosterone all play their part. And while the symptoms can feel overwhelming, the good news is that you can take control and feel better.

As your estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA levels drop, it impacts everything—from your energy to your drive, and yes, your motivation. But here’s the silver lining: you can do something about it.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with all the advice floating around the internet, each one promising a magic fix. But I’m here to make it simple for you. Let’s start with the basics, the changes that can truly make a huge difference:

Prioritize Sleep
Are you really giving your body the rest it needs? Try to go to bed at least 1-2 hours before midnight and avoid screens and heavy meals before sleep. This will help you tap into those restorative sleep cycles. Sleep is a game-changer—your body regenerates, your energy levels rise, and your motivation gets a natural boost.

Stay Active
Movement isn’t just about staying fit—it’s about giving your mind and body the energy and joy it craves. Whether it’s walking, yoga, or even a dance break in your living room, aim for 7,000 to 14,000 steps a day. Your body will thank you—and so will your mood!

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Water isn’t just for staying hydrated. It’s essential for energy, motivation, and mental clarity. If you’re not drinking enough throughout the day, your body could be feeling sluggish. Aim to keep a water bottle by your side and sip throughout the day.

These may seem like small changes, but they have a huge impact on your motivation levels and energy. But I know sometimes, these alone aren’t enough. If you’re still feeling sluggish, fatigued, and like your drive is gone, then it’s time to dig a little deeper.

This is where functional medicine truly shines. If you’re feeling stuck, it could be due to deeper imbalances that need personalized attention. Lab testing can uncover hormonal imbalances and nutrient deficiencies that are making it harder for you to regain your energy and motivation. Together, we’ll create a tailored plan that could include dietary changes, stress management, hormone replacement therapy, or natural supplements to get you back on track.
